Reading Skills and Speed Reading Programs for Children and Adults Offered this Summer in West Barnstable

For a productive and enjoyable activity with lifelong benefits, we recommend our reading skills and speed reading programs, which can turn poor readers into good readers, and good readers in gread readers.  These exceptional programs are offered through Boston University’s Metropolitan College & Extended Education, and are designed and taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development.  The Institute has provided non-credit instructional services in conjunction with Metropolitan College & Extended Education for the past 20 years.

  • Program for 4-year olds and entering kindergartners – Learn to Read, Phonics, Sight Words: In this fun summer program, your child will learn to read.  Children learn letter recognition, beginning phonics, and easy sight words.  Your child will learn to read simple words and short sentences and will be excited about books and reading.
  • Program for entering 1st graders – Phonics, Sight Words, Fluency, Comprehension:  In this fun summer program, your child will learn to read independently.  Children learn phonics and sight words, build fluency and comprehension, and develop a love of books and reading.  Your child will be excited about reading and get off to a great start in first grade.
  • Program for entering 2nd graders & Program for entering 3rd graders – Phonics, Fluency, Comprehension:  In these fun summer programs, your child will become a strong, fluent reader.  Children build solid phonics and long-word decoding skills and develop reading fluency and excellent comprehension.  Your child will gain confidence, be excited about books and reading, and get off to a great start in school next year.
  • Program for entering 4th graders & Program for entering 5th graders– Comprehension, Fiction & Non-Fiction, Textbook Skills:  In these fun and effective programs, your child will become a skilled, enthusiatic reader.  Students develop strong comprehension skills in fiction, non-fiction, and textbooks.  They build long-word decoding skills and learn to read more fluently and rapidly.  Your child will complete homework more quickly and easily, be more successful in school, and develop a liflong love of reading.
  • Program for entering 6th -8th graders & Program for entering 9th-11th graders– Speed Reading, Comprehension, Textbook Skills:  In these effective and enjoyable programs, your son or daughter will make substantial gains in comprehension and learn to increase their reading speed.  Students learn the best way to take notes, study for tests, and read fiction, non-fiction, and textbooks.  Your student will complete homework more quickly and easily, get better grades, and enjoy reading more.
  • For Adults, enteringt 12th graders, and college students – Speed Reading for Work, school, and pleasure:  Upon completion of our speed reading program, our average studen can expect to read twice as fast in diffult material, such as textbooks and other challenging non-fiction, and triple their speed in easier reading.  The comprehension, concentration and retention techniques you learn will enable you to save time and get more out of everything you read.

  • 4-year old & K: Sat., July 28-Aug. 25, 9-10am
  • 1st grade: Sat., July 28-Aug. 25, 10:30-12:15pm
  • 2nd grade: Sat., July 28-Aug. 25, 1-2:45pm
  • 3rd grade: Sat., July 28-Aug. 25, 3:15-5pm
  • 4th grade: Mon., July 30-Aug. 27, 4pm-6pm
  • 5th grade: Mon., July 30-Aug. 27, 1:30-3:30pm
  • 6th-8th grade: Mon., July 30-Aug. 27, 8:30-10:30am
  • 9th -11th grades: Mon., July 30-Aug. 27, 11am-1pm
  • 12th grade & adults: Several schedules available, please call!

Alternate times and dates are available at nearby locations.  These programs are offered soley through Boston University’s Metropolitan College & Extended Education and are not affiliated with the Boston University School of Education.
