Grief After an Overdose Death: Educational Film & Community Forum

The Community Forum is an opportunity for the public to learn about the experience of grief after a loved one dies from an overdose. A new educational film will be shown, titled Among the Many: Wisdom, Companionship, and Hope forThose Who Have Lost a Loved One to Drug Overdose. After the film, there will be a panel discussion, including audience questions. Information will be available about grief suppor resources.

Panelists to include:

  • Franklin Cook of Watertown is a peer grief support advocate who was interviewed in the film. He is a director of SADOD (Support After a Death by Overdose), a statewide project funded by the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services.
  • Jeanne Flynn of Bourne who was interviewed in the film about her grief following the death of her son, Brian, in 2015. She facilitates Consoling Partners, a peer grief support group in East Sandwich.
  • Rick Bickford of Marstons Mills is a grief counselor at VNA Hospice of Cape Cod and, with his wife Kerry, co-facilitates nathan’s Circle, a peer grief support group in Hyannis. The Bickford’s son, Nathan, died in 2018.
  • Glen Lord of Nashua, NH, a director of SADOD, will moderate the audience questions.

The forum to be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm at Cape Cod Community College (Science Bldg, Lecture Hall A) – Use Parking Lot 7 & 8, 2240 Iyannough Road, Barnstable, MA 02668

This event is hosted by the Cape Cod Community College Student Wellness Office and sponsored by Learn to Cope. Programming is presented by SADOD (Support After a Death by Overdose). Learn To Cope is a non-profit support network that offers education, resources, peer support and hope for parents and family members coping with a loved one addicted to opiates or other drugs.
